About This Item

The YEV series is a game-changing electric violin that does not sacrifice sound or good looks for price.

This versatile electric violin is made from 6 different woods (Ebony, Rosewood, Spruce, Maple, Mahogany and Walnut) that add to the overall organic, natural & resonant sound of the amplified instrument. It uses a passive pickup. Passive (piezo) pickups directly send the signal from the string through the wood, into the pickup and into the amp which creates a dynamic, organic sound. Many musicians prefer a passive pickup to be able to have a naturally pleasant sound coupled with using their volume knob, enabling a multitude of tones without adjusting gain or treble on the amp.

The ebony pegs, chinrest and a composite tailpiece are all standard 4/4 size which can be found on traditional acoustic instruments. These fittings can be easily switched out to a players' personal preference. Comes standard with D'Addario Zyex strings, which can also be changed to any other strings. Player can use any bow and shoulder rest. Lower bout will accommodate most standard shoulder rests. Fits in a 4/4 size violin case. Weight 1.2 lbs.

I see that there is a curled piece of wood on the right side of the neck board. Does that prevent shifting, because I would be laying classical music on the violin?

SHAR Answer:

Hello Julia! That curved part of the violin is positioned to mimic the upper bout of an acoustic violin. You should be able to shift the same way would would on your acoustic instrument while using this mock upper bout as a guide. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Asked On: 01/19/2019

Can I put a center mount chin rest on this, flip the bridge and flip the strings in order to finger with my right hand and bow with my left. This is the only way I can play due to an injury to my left hand. I’m already playing an acoustic violin that was built as a left handed violin.

SHAR Answer:

Hello Adeana! You should be able to install a center mounted chinrest on this instrument without issue. I recommend being very mindful of the wires when flipping the bridge. Theoretically, it should be able to twist, but be sure not to pull the bridge off or bend the wires in any way while re-positioning it. And the only thing that might cause issues while playing left handed would be the lack of hand support on the left side of the instrument. Please note that if you do make these changes, we cannot accept the instrument back for return or exchange and the warranty may be voided on any electrical issues that may occur after the switch. For further advice or clarification regarding modifications on this instrument, please consider contacting Yamaha, as this may be a circumstance they have encountered before. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
