The back is of two pieces of maple, cut on the quarter, of narrow-width flame ascending from the center joint. The ribs and scroll are of similar maple. The top is of two pieces of spruce, cut on the quarter, of fine-width grain widening slightly at the flanks. The varnish is red-orange over a golden ground.

Founded in 1902 by Ernst Heinrich Roth, the E. H. Roth company has regularly produced some of the finest German stringed instruments. It has also produced some of the best violin makers in Germany – apprentices with the firm who developed into master violin makers. All Roth violins have the Roth label inside, with the names of the best makers appearing on the labels.
