Bach, JS - Chromatic Fantasy, BWV 903 - Viola solo - transcribed by Zoltán Kodály - Boosey & Hawkes Edition
J.S. Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D Minor was originally written for keyboard. The fiery fantasy, with its turbulent melodic contours and intense technical demands, rendered it a favorite piece of Romantic piano virtuosos like Lizst, and it has maintained its popularity ever since. This arrangement, transcribed from the piano part by Zoltán Kodály and edited by William Primrose, shows off the viola as a virtuosic instrument. From the two "lightning bolts" that begin the piece to the powerful chords which fill out the melody, the Chromatic Fantasy is an impressive testament to Baroque ingenuity, and a wonderful addition to the viola repertoire.
