Two years old and still holding up well!
I bought this case as it was the only one Shar reps said would fit my slightly oversized Maggini copy fiddle. It is a snug fit lengthwise but fits and feels very secure in place. All hardware has held up well. It has endured the weekly 1/2 mile winter snowshoe hike to our garage at the end of the county road here in the UP of Michigan for a couple of years. The only change I've made was to remove the string tube and its holders because the holders were snagging the hair on my good bow. I probably could have put my backup bow in the top position but felt safer taking out the offending hardware. Overall this has been a great case for me.
Some Designing Comments
Have had this case for 1 week so far. Tacky-looking big gold-tinted outside hardware (D-rings, etc.). Outside canvas cover seems thin and junky. Inside compartment is tiny! It's about 2" x 3", and it could have been designed to extend twice as far up, all the way up to where the scroll of the violin ends. See the picture. (So there's no place to store extra string envelopes or metronome, besides loose in the pegbox part of the case. It's hard to fit shoulder rest in the velcro shoulder rest strap next to the violin. Good Backpack straps, and good shape of case.
Simply Gorgeous
I was looking for a lightweight case, but everything I found was either very low quality or too bulky. Then, I found this case. Wow! The answer to my prayers! It's lightweight, and even though it's a shaped case (which reminds me of my youth), it has a beautiful, classy design. I adore the brass touches, and the interior is beautiful. It even has quilted padding along the bottom, which makes me feel a lot more comfortable about hauling my violin on the subway.
Pretty Good Case
The strap broke within one month. I had to tie it back to keep it together, but it still falls off occasionally. That's my biggest problem. But on the plus side, it's very compact and light. You can't put much things inside, other than small object (rosins, shoulder rest, etc.) though.
Interior colors not as depicted.
The interior of the case that I received is not the Red Claret shown in the website photo. Instead, the case I received has a Camel interior with Red-Violet accents. Unfortunately, after making a couple inquiries, I have not received any explanation for the inverse color scheme.
Decadent!
I just bought this case and I really like it. The lining on the inside is absolutely decadent (it's so soft!). I find this case to be really light. The only thing that I find awkward about it is the lock: You have to pull this little piece out and then push it down, and it's hard to get a grip on. I suppose that's the point, but when you're in a rush to get your violin out, it's not ideal. However, I love the rest of the case so much that I'm willing to overlook the awkward lock. Great value.
Exterior cover is plastic, not canvas
The case is nice inside and seems very sturdy, but the exterior cover is cheap, shiny plastic, rather the expected canvas / fabric shown in the photos. I wonder if the construction of this item has changed since the photos were taken?
great case
I travel by plane frequently, and this case fits the bill for what I have been looking for. It is compact and lightweight yet made out of wood and protective at the same time. The inside and outside fittings are all very good quality. I especially like the padded shoulder straps. Friends have commented on the attractiveness of the case also. I am very happy I made the purchase.
Sturdy and elegant
I'm sorry other reviewers have had issues with this case, but I've had mine for several years and it's held up beautifully. It is light, compact, incredibly elegant on the inside (I get compliments on it all the time) and has protected my instrument perfectly. Something not mentioned in the description is all the organizer slots and zipper compartments in the outside cover pocket: there's a cell phone pocket, a mesh pocket perfect for holding string envelopes, pencil slots, and a cool sort of "secret compartment" zipped pocket that runs all along the bottom where I've put paychecks, etc. The only difficulty I've had is in gaining the coordination needed to keep the magnetic snaps from closing again while I open the latch...but that's minor compared to the value of a great case at a great price.
Best compact/ travel case
I purchase this case about a year ago and it has been the best conpact/travel case I ever had. It is great when I travel, in the music compartment it has a place to place my passport, pecils and bussines cards. The only "good problem" I found is the magnets on the weather strip; these stick so well that I have to use both hands to open the case. All magnents need to be open at the same time to be able to open the actual case lock. I got the one with the black interior, it is very sharp looking case. I got it while it was on sale so it made it an even better investment.
Great Case
This case is AMAZING! Ive had it for over a year and I am still just as in love with it now as I was when I pulled it out of the shipping box. I travel alot and all the handles are great for hauling it in and out of stores in cold weather. The latch has held up well, the brass fittings are still in tact, and the rain flap has kept the water and snow out. I would reccoment this case to anyone who wants a travel easy case that is protective of their instrument.
Great for the Plane
I play in a chamber orchestra and studio teach along with all the gigging that goes with the territory. I purchased this case for ease of travel. Despite the small size the case is substantial. It is well made. My violin fits very tightly. It does not move around at all. While it does not have a lot of extra room the shoulder rest extra strings, rosin, and mutes, all fit. I have taken it on the plane. It fits in the overheads of the smaller commuter planes just fine. Because of the plywood construction I did not worry when it got shoved around on the plane.

Poorly made case
I was really disappointed in this case. The area where the D-ring for the shoulder strap is attached to the case started ripping after only one week. It appears to be a design flaw: for extra strength, the D-ring should be bolted to the case, but this one is just sewn on. Interestingly, I have a colleague who purchased this case in 2011 and the D-rings ARE bolted on. It appears they changed the design sometime between when she purchased it and when I did in October 2012. Her case has held up very nicely. Oh well. Thanks for handling the return so smoothly.
Very Nice Case!
My violin is a century-old German Maggini copy that is about 3/8" longer than a standard sized violin. Shar customer support used my full-sized template and recommended this case. It is a very snug and secure fit. The product description is accurate. Case looks good and hardware appears to be sturdy. My BonMusica shoulder rest fits next to the scroll in a matching velvet bag I made for it. Bottom line: A compact, strong, good looking case.
Main clasp is breaking
I don't usually write reviews, but I've been using this case for about half a year and the main clasp is already broken. It sometimes takes me a minute or two to coax it open-- it's always stuck. Another girl in my studio has this case and has had exactly the same problem, so it's not an isolated issue. I got this case because it was nice-looking, lightweight, and cheaper than Bam, but now I'm wishing I had spent the extra cash.
Great case! Highly recommended
Very compact - fits in my daypack with room to spare so great for travel or walking to teach my fiddle classes. Very sturdy plywood; I can stand on it and does not crush and the hardware seems equally well made. Compared to many of the alternatives - No non-recyclable plastic (except maybe the nylon cover), no worries about inevitable unattractive scratches on the outside. I thought I would miss the room I had with my old oblong but it holds what I really need - rosin, practice mute, nail trimmer, peg dope, spare tuner battery. In the main compartment I keep spare strings and wrap a wrist brace around a large clip-on tuner along with some business cards, The case doesn't hold my Bonmusica but easily holds my second favorite shoulder rest (Kun). The outer flap compartment holds lots of stuff too - more spare strings, open-finger gloves, folded papers. A violinist friend who owns a BAM and has researched cases a lot compares this favorably to the Musafia. I only wish it came in more colors - green or brown or blue would have been nice.

You get what you pay for
This case has protected my instrument and is a good price, but my issues are: The lock frequently jams The subway handle broke almost immediately
