The guide on the Vio-Meter indicates in fractions the various size instruments. The black dot above the fractions indicates the median size for the particular instrument. A student who measures anywhere within the parameters set by the parallel lines on either side of a fraction may comfortably use that size instrument. Should the measurement tend toward the lower half of a given range, the teacher may elect to use the smaller size.

I have used this tool for 20+ years. It is perfect, particularly for Suzuki teachers who understand that the violin only is measured to the wrist and not the palm. It helps as a guide to choosing the proper size instrument.

The vio-meter is a great idea. It's a helpful tool, however its measurements seem off. I sized 12 kids for a new beginners class and had to send back 4 instruments (to shar) for down sizing. :( I'm going to try to attach a yard stick with viola and violin sizes marked on my yard stick to my vio-meter and see how that goes. The chin rest on the vio-meter is nice. Best wishes!
