About This Item

Form Follows Function

This architect's and designer's adage has long dictated how to design products that work. If you have grown increasingly frustrated by your search for a suitable shoulder rest, but find yourself increasingly constricted, perhaps it's time to go back to square one €“ what do you need a shoulder rest to do for you? If you are looking for support combined with freedom of movement, for a bit friction to keep your violin from sliding while keeping it on the collarbone, and not squelching your violin or viola's tone, the elegant new ArcRest may be the answer.

Low, like a cosmetic sponge, but with minimal points of contact on your instrument, the ArcRest is designed and crafted in the USA by violinists Aaron Bailey and Tigran Vardanyan. Originally for their personal use, Aaron and Tigran were soon swamped by requests from their musician friends who were frustrated with their shoulder rests!

The base of the ArcRest is hand made from super lightweight balsa wood, laminated for strength but with a bit of give. Four polyurethane dots are all that contact the back of your violin or viola. Held in place by a translucent white silicone band, the ArcRest can be positioned anywhere that is comfortable for you. Once in place, attach one of the cellular foam pads €“ choose whichever one is the correct thickness for you (each box comes with two pads of slightly different thicknesses). The ArcRest is small enough to easily store in your accessory compartment, and with no need to remove the silicone band, so you're quickly ready to go next time you play.

The ArcRest is available in three thicknesses: Thin, Medium, or Thick. Only the pads differ in thickness, with the base being identical for each. Open the €œFeatures/Specs€ tab to see the dimensions of the two pads that come with each thickness.

Question by:

  • Littleton, CO

Asked On: 11/02/2017

I have a long neck and have struggled to find a shoulder rest that doesn't slip on my shoulder. I have recently used the bon musica, but the violin still slides about my boney frame. How thick a gauge would you recommend for this rest?

SHAR Answer:

Hi Jennifer! The thick size ArcRest tends to be the best choice for players with a long neck. This is the tallest option and will give you some added lift for your instrument. If you find that this shoulder rest does not fit your setup, you may return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Please feel free to contact us directly at 1-800-248-7427 if you have any additional questions.
