About This Item

Playing the String Game is a unique how-to book designed for the busy string teacher. Packed with hundreds of creative teaching ideas, it can be used with any string teaching method. Practical material for use in the classroom or private studio is compartmentalized for easy access at a moment's glance. No lengthy reading is required. This book contains 165 specific teaching devices which have proven successful with various age levels. Each is divided into four parts:

  1. The exact words the teacher can say to guide the student in discovering the position, action, or kinesthetic sense required by an isolated instrumental technique. Much use is made of mental images and analogies to enable the student to build on familiar experiences gained in everyday life. This section is written in language considered relevant by modern youth. Although the cello is the teaching instrument in the descriptions, most of the ideas are applicable to the other stringed instruments.
  2. A statement headed When to Use.
  3. A detailed explanation of the basic technical principles, concepts, and goals behind each device, provided for the teacher's benefit.
  4. Information regarding the adaptability of the teaching technique to the violin, viola, and string bass.

Though these teaching devices usually take only a few seconds, they can perform crucial roles in recognizing, predicting, and solving problems. Specific lists of checkpoints for home practice are also provided.

A joy to read, this book sparkles with imagination and humor yet provides a deep insight into the requirements of sensitive, expressive string playing. Based on years of successful string teaching experience at all advancement levels, Playing the String Game was written to share ideas with the following:

  • Public school teachers seeking new teaching techniques for string classes and for young cello students.
  • Private teachers of cello, violin, viola, or string bass on the lookout for fresh, revitalizing approaches to incorporate into their present style of teaching.
  • Performing string players with little or no training in teaching or working with young people, either individually or in groups.
  • New, inexperienced string teachers.
  • University students who are preparing to enter the string teaching profession.

“A wonderful, unique book by a master teacher. A treasure for teachers of all stringed instruments. You will be inspired by the richness of this work. A fun “game” for every aspect of technique. Proven successful with various age levels.”
- Michael Avsharian, Executive Vice President SHAR Music
