Dominant Strings

These strings have a highly flexible, multi-strand nylon core. The resounding success of Dominant strings is due to its similarity in tone and response to gut strings, without gut's attendant drawbacks. The sound is full and mellow, yet rich in overtones. Its ability to project sound without being metallic comes to the fore both in arco and pizzicato. Also offers effortless response to intricate fingering and tuning stability even under extreme humidity and temperature conditions. Dominant strings should be changed at appropriate intervals to ensure continuity of tone color.

Terrible strings…

Horrible experience with these strings. Like very cheap strings, they go up in pitch as you increase the speed of the bow (no martelé). They cannot support much weight needed for good tone on viola (poor performance playing any kind of Strauss or Brahms and sometimes even Beethoven) and the strings are not responsive to light, fast strokes (Mendelssohn Scherzo, complete nightmare with these strings).

I play on an old Italian viola by Matthias Albani made in 1691. I will never buy these strings again and would not even recommend this product to my beginning students. I bought these strings for the acclaimed decreased string tension and ease of playing. Absolute failure of a product.

These strings have nearly doubled in price but not quality over the last few years. It’s like the company didn’t bother to change the formula from the violin strings. Please avoid if you are looking for good sound quality and performance. They seem to work okay on violin… only.

Dominants are NOT prone to breaking

"I am writing this review in response to other reviews. I've used Thomastik Dominants, mostly bought via Shar, for 36 years. I'm a professional violist and educator and I've never had a problem with Dominants or with Shar. Those people who are having repeated
issues likely have an issue with their instrument having a sharp edge somewhere where they shouldn't. Some types of fine tuners have you loop the string over a sharp edge - this can cause breakage. Sometimes your string has dug into the bridge (the pressure
of the strings over time can cause this) and it can cause a sharp edge there that causes breakage. I've seen many a poorly made nut (at the top of the fingerboard) that is sharp and causes breakage. This will happen more often with cheap instruments made with
poor materials and workmanship. I don't use Dominants exclusively, but they are the string I've used most often in my career because they are reliable and long lasting. I strongly feel you can trust them. If you are having strings break repeatedly, see a reputable
luthier (someone who specializes in string instruments only; not a store that sells every instrument under the sun) and my guess is they will be able to show you exactly why your string keeps breaking."

AMAZING!!!!

I've been looking for the best quality strings that bring out that deep rich sound. I just love the sound of the G and C strings. Don't get me wrong the A and D sound awesome too. The only thing I have to say that is pretty minor is that they have a hard time staying in tune the first day or two which is only natural. I am enjoying these strings and I hope you enjoy yours too. Thanks, Shar!

Excellent Viola Strings

I have been exclusively using Dominant strings on my Viola 16 inch for 8 years. These strings are very durable. In that time I have only had 2 A strings break at the ball. After 2 days they hold their tune very well when new. The G string is my favorite.
Beautiful warm sound. I continue to use these strings and highly recommend them. They go on sale once in a while which is a bonus. I just ordered another set this week on sale, as my spare set. I usually change the strings every 18 months. I play most days..
