REVIEW VIDEOS

"Julius Klengel was a man well known for his composition skills. Born in Leipzig, he began taking cello lessons from his father at a very young age. At the age of 15 he was sitting principal cello in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and began composing. He has composed hundreds of pieces for violoncello including 4 cello concertos, 2 double concertos, quartets, a sonata, and many etudes and technical studies. It is important for musicians to always go back to the basics. Klengel's Technical Studies are a great compilation of scales and arpeggios helping cellists focus on intonation, bow distribution, clarity, tone production, and rhythm. This book is a very helpful study guide in advancing players, helping them to understand every area and position of the cello. Klengel's studies have become an asset in my daily practice and are a very helpful tool in playing any style or piece of music with precision."

Decent book of scale studies

I'm reasonably happy with Klengel's Technical Studies. I actually bought a copy for myself first and then decided to transition my students to this book instead of what we've been using. It is versatile because it starts with 2 octave scales and bowing variations for these scales, gradually increasing in speed (from whole notes to 16th notes). It includes arpeggios in 2 octaves with bowing variations and scales in broken thirds. Then, it provides all of this for 3 octave scales and for 4 octave scales. It's nowhere near as comprehensive as Flesch's or Fischer's books for violin, but it's a good place to start.
