I was having a terrible time with a whistling violin E string. It got so bad that it would wistle, not just in string crossings, but in just playing on the E string. It was repeatable and bsolutely un-playable. I thought at first something had changed with my bowing technique, but it whistled with any type of bow stroke at all. I replaced it with a new Dominant, and the problem was largely eliminated, but it would still whistle often in string crossings--especially on double-stops as in the Bach unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas. I read about the Kaplan non-whistling aluminum wire-wound E and thought I would try it. I did and it stopped the whistling dead. I can now play, confident that the E string will not whistle under any conditions. I thought there would be some compromise to such a string, but to my amazement the string also has a beautiful, non-shrill tone. I cannot hear any compromise in tonal quality or fullness of projection, and best of all it never whistles. It made me very happy. Concerning the first problem string, I never realized that a string could suddenly become such a problem. It was a sudden and drastic change. No manner of rosin, or lack thereof, different bows, different bow tensions, or bowing styles could remedy the problem. But the Kaplan string did--well worth the money. ... (See Full Review)
