The two mazurkas of Wieniawski's Op. 12 are not heard nearly as often as the more famous Op. 19 mazurkas, but they are lovely pieces in their own way. They are somewhat unusual, however, differing in character from many pieces in this genre. Generally speaking, a mazurka is a rustic type of Polish dance in triple meter with the accent falling on the second or third beat, and the tempo is usually upbeat and lively. The Sielanka, Op. 12, No.1 answers this description pretty well ("sielanka" and "champetre" both referring to a pastoral setting), but the Chanson Polonaise, Op. 12, No. 2 is slower and more lyrical, lacking the strong accents usually present in a mazurka. It does, however, have a similarly Polish sound, and, of course, plenty of Wieniawskian displays of technical ability.
