Vivaldi's Op. 2 violin sonatas are notable in that they contain remarkably active parts for cello in the basso continuo accompaniment. Apparently, the composer had initially intended them to be billed as duets for violin and cello, thus giving the cello a more prominent role than usual. Although they were eventually published as violin sonatas rather than violin and cello duets, the notes remained largely unchanged. The Sonata in d minor, RV 14, is the sixth sonata in this set of twelve. Its minor key lends a pensivity and melancholy to this nevertheless virtuosic, truly Baroque work. This edition for violin and keyboard also contains the ad lib cello part, and is edited by Josef Gingold. Published by the International Music Company. Difficulty: A4/A5
