Caprice Brillant in b minor was, for Saint-Saens, a sort of "first draft" of what would later evolve into his now-famous Violin Concerto No. 3 - specifically, the third movement, major themes from which can be heard first in the Caprice Brillant. Composed as a tribute to the great Spanish violinist-composer Pablo Sarasate, this piece is virtuosic not only for the violinist, but for the pianist as well - a fact indicative of Saint-Saens' own brilliant technical abilities at the keyboard. The Caprice Brillant is thus a partnership of equals, with both players getting the opportunity to exhibit their skills. This edition is the first printed version of this work, and is edited by Bert Hagels. Published by Ries & Erler. Distributed by Carl Fischer. Difficulty: A6
