Samuel Barber’s beloved Violin Concerto, composed between 1939-40, was the young composer's first major commission.  Requested by soap tycoon Samuel Fels (of Fels Naphtha), the concerto's intended performer was the violinist Iso Briselli, who ultimately decided not to premiere the work himself, due to a disagreement with Barber over the third and final movement.

Fortunately for Barber, the concerto went on to become one of his most popular works.  Unabashedly tonal, its opening theme is lush and romantic, its second movement tender and nostalgic, and its final movement fiery and brilliant. The concerto was revised by the composer himself in 1948.  It is this revised version which is performed so often today. 

This G. Schirmer edition is for violin and piano.
