February 15, 2011Delighted to Disappointed
I was very excited upon discovering a solo violin arrangement for "The Phantom of the Opera" , since it's my favorite musical. However, after playing through the whole book in about 20 minutes, 'm a bit disappointed. In 3 out of 9 pieces, there's a long rest which leaves one wondering what to do in that time. Is there a piano accompaniment part available? If there is, it's not sold in conjunction with this book. In pieces that were originally vocalist duets, it's as if this arrangement is TOO faithful. One who knows the lyrics by heart can easily pick out each character's phrases, but the lines run together without pause like a train wreck. In "All I Ask of You" and "Point of No Return" I can't help but wonder WHY is it arranged in such a linear fashion? One can hardly distinguish between Christine and Raoul or The Phantom because the arranger did not make use of the full range of the violin. I understand if this book was intended for students new to 3rd position, but it would have been more fluid if the arranger had made it easier to tell which character might have this line or that line. In "Point of No Return," it's as if Christine sings the whole song, rather than Christine and the opera ghost. Overall, I'm disappointed in this arrangement. Even though it's a light and easy pastime to relax with between more serious things, as a Phantom of the Opera fan I must say it's nothing but a copy-and-paste rush job. ... (See Full Review)
