Renowned pedagogue Shirley Givens’ series for beginning violinists is widely respected for its clear, child-friendly format, and its sensible progression through techniques.  There are lots of pictures, fun and familiar songs, and even pages for coloring!  Ms. Givens uses a “movable Do” system to teach pitch relationships and good intonation. 

Book 1B, Do Re Mi, introduces the fingers of the left hand, and presents visual and aural concepts of note relationships. There are songs and simple duets using 3-note melodies, and also simple note-writing songs and exercises.

    Givens books

    I have been using the Shirley Givens Adventures in Violinland series for many years and it is my absolute favorite for young beginners. It teaches reading and basic music theory from day one, ith equal use of all 4 strings (movable "Do" principle). There are continual excellent ideas and reminders for basic violin posture and setup. To kids it reads like a "comic book" with the fun pictures and drawings on every page. I love this series! ... (See Full Review)
