The Essential Elements For Strings series is one of the most popular comprehensive methods for learning to play a string instrument.  It is most often used in group or classroom settings, although some private teachers use it as well. 

Book 1 is appropriate for beginners, as it starts by naming the parts of the instrument, then illustrating correct posture and positioning.  Each page includes several short pieces of music, plus “essential elements” such as music history, music theory, and helpful practice tips.  There are plenty of pictures illustrating hand position, and many of the musical excerpts are well-known. 

Although best used as a supplement to group or private instruction, the Essential Elements series could also be used as a resource for learning a string instrument on your own.
