Jean-Marie Leclair was an important violinist-composer of the French Baroque. He is often called Leclair l'aine (the Elder), to distinguish him from his younger brother, also called Jean-Marie, who is often called Leclair le cadet (the Younger). These Six Sonatas for Two Violins, Op. 3 are exemplary of French Baroque writing, particularly in their florid ornamentation, and provide both violinists with equal opportunities to exhibit their talents. Opus 3 was composed in 1730, around the same time as Leclair's second marriage to Louise Roussel, a music engraver who would go on to publish all the composer's work from Op. 2 onward.

This edition for two violins is edited by Wiard Rost. Published by Heinrichshofen's Verlag, distributed by Edition Peters.
