Classical composer Francois Devienne primarily wrote operas and pieces for wind instruments; his own instrument was the flute. The "French Mozart," as he was sometimes called, also taught at the Paris Conservatoire from the date of its charter in 1795 (he had previously taught at the school, but it was renamed in the years following the French Revolution). The Three Duos for Flute and Viola from Devienne's Op. 5 (which is a set of six duos) are not only notable in that they are scored for a rather unusal pairing of instruments; they are also considered some of the composer's best works, and some of the clearest examples of his style. Both players are allowed to shine in these true chamber works, best suited to advanced intermediate players. This edition is presented in score form (both parts are printed on the same page), and is edited by Druener. Published by Edition Kunzelmann. Difficulty: A4
