Bela Bartok's 44 Duos for two violins represent a revolutionary approach to counterpoint. Typical of Bartok, they are based on Hungarian folksongs - some melancholy and dark, others rustic and boisterous. However, also typical of Bartok, they are highly experimental, toying with dissonance, polytonality, and rhythm. There are even some duets in this collection in which the two violin parts are playing in different keys at the same time! Book 2 contains the last 22 duets. This edition is presented in score form (both violin parts are printed on the same page). Published by Boosey & Hawkes. Difficulty: ASTA grades 3-4

    wonderful duets for violin

Bartok wrote these duets to be used for teaching students to play the violin. They sure are different than the suzuki books! I did book 2 of these duets as a kid and I loved them. Now I like o have my students play them. For my student concerts on New Years day each year Im happy if in the program I can have at least one my students playing one of Bartoks New Years Songs. The duets are great for getting a good sense of rhythm and counting, intonation, and getting the feeling through the music of what life was like in eastern Europe then. They sure are different than duets by Pleyel, Mazas, Michael McLean and the Bach double violin concerto. Especially with a few more minor seconds and major 7ths in the harmonies and as passing tones than you normally find in I IV V I. But the tunes are great and fun to play. ... (See Full Review)
