In the preface to this work, Ivan Galamian and Frederick Neumann state that “Since technical mastery depends more on control of mind over muscle than upon mere agility of fingers, the direct way to such mastery lies through working procedures which present a constant challenge to the student’s thinking processes.”  This Technique aims to address all the challenges normally faced by advancing students of the cello and then systematically “work” them until they are no longer problematic.

Volume 1 of this important contribution to the cellist’s arsenal is divided into two main parts: scale and arpeggio exercises, and bowing and rhythm patterns.  The bowing and rhythm section is a separate part and pulls out of the book.
