August 31, 2010sizing is frustrating
Shoulder rests are very personal things. I really like this one. My viola feels lighter when I use the bonmusica, it is very comfortable, and I don't feel locked into a single position when use it, which I was afraid of. However, I'm very frustrated with the sizing of this shoulder rest. I am currently playing on one 16 inch viola and one 16-1/2 inch viola. The 16 inch Bonmusica rest fits the 16-1/2 inch viola perfectly. It doesn't even come close to fitting my 16 inch viola. It is too small. A colleague had the same problem. She had to buy a 17 inch Bonmusica rest to fit her 16-1/2 inch viola. String length has little to do with the width of the lower bout. I wish the width dimensions of the shoulder rest were available on Shar's site. My advice? Try it out before you buy it to check sizing and comfort on your instrument. ... (See Full Review)

I have wrestled with the viola for 10 years, til a recent string workshop where an instructor took the Bonmusica apart, putting it back together for a custom fit for me; the frame twisted and he legs adjusted to just the right height. It now looks weird, but the fit is perfect. We then strapped 2 foam cosmetic sponges to the leg that rests on my chest and I'm amazed at the difference. No more tension, even though I'm a small framed woman playing a 16 inch viola. ... (See Full Review)
