About This Item

Samuel Barber’s belovedViolin Concerto, composed between 1939-40, was the young composer's first major commission.  Requested by soap tycoon Samuel Fels (of Fels Naphtha), the concerto's intended performer was the violinist IsoBriselli, who ultimately decided not to premiere the work himself, due to adisagreement with Barber over the third and final movement.

Fortunately forBarber, the concerto went on to become one of his most popular works.  Unabashedly tonal, its opening theme is lushand romantic, its second movement tender and nostalgic, and its final movementfiery and brilliant.
The concerto was revised by the composer himselfin 1948.  It is this revised versionwhich is performed so often today.

This G. Schirmer edition is for violin and piano.
