About This Item

Ravel's famous Pavane pour une infante défunte (also known as "Pavane for a Dead Princess") was composed for solo piano in 1899. Premiered in 1902, the piece brought increased popularity to Ravel, who at the time was still studying at the Paris Conservatoire under Fauré. While Ravel was notably critical of his own piece, particularly the form, it is nonetheless considered a classic work of lyricism. Ravel famously criticized a young pianist for playing a "dead pavane for a princess" instead of a "pavane for a dead princess" - he said that the work was not a funeral piece but rather an evocation of a dance that would have been performed by a princess of old.

This edition for string quartet contains a score and parts for two violins, viola, and cello, and is edited by Wolfgang Birtel. Published by Schott Music.

Difficulty: 3 - 4
