About This Item

Luise Adolpha Le Beau was a German Romantic composer in the tradition of Brahms and Schumann. Like them, she was a pianist, and a particularly gifted one at that; in fact, she studied piano with Clara Schumann for a time in her early twenties. As a composer, she was often frustrated by the male-dominated world of composition and its often disparaging attitudes toward women and their music. As a result of these prejudices, her work was not well-known in her own lifetime.

Her Sonate, Op. 17, was originally composed for cello and piano. This transcription for viola and piano by Susan Pickett strives to remain true to the original score in terms of register, though in some sections, parts have been displaced by an octave to give the viola the best advantage of its natural sound.

Published by Hildegard Publishing Company.

Difficulty: A4/A5
