About This Item

Originally composed for piano, this lovely, reflective Intermezzo (Op. 117, No. 1) has been transcribed for viola and piano by Paul Klengel.  Beginning in D major, it modulates into the darker parallel key of d minor for several lines before returning again to D major.  Brahms' gift for playing with time is exhibited in the gently syncopated rhythms of the development section.  The meditative, lullaby-like qualities of this Intermezzo make it a beautiful addition to a recital program or worship service.

This edition is a reprint of the 1893 Simrock publication.  In the piano score, the printed solo line is labeled "Violoncell", but the solo part included is for viola.  It makes no difference to performance, as the solo line is the same.  Arranged and edited by Paul Klengel.  Published by Lauren Publications.

Difficulty: A4
