About This Item

Woldemar Bargiel, the half-brother of Clara Schumann, moved in the same musical circles as Clara and her husband Robert Schumann.  Unlike his famous sister and brother-in-law, however, his career was mainly focused on teaching theory and composition.  He was, at various times in his life, on the faculties of the conservatories in Cologne, Rotterdam, and Berlin.  During this time, he did compose a short catalogue of his own works, though almost none are known today.  Of that output, much is chamber music, like this Adagio for Cello and Piano.  With an estimated playing time of around six minutes, Bargiel's Adagio makes a nice addition to a recital program.

This edition for cello and piano is published by Edition Sikorski.

Difficulty: A4
