Wieniawski, Henryk - Ecole Moderne, Op. 10 - Solo Violin - edited by Ivan Galamian - published by International Music Company

Item# 0112 111

Shar: $13.00Sale: $11.70

  • Instrumentation: Violin
  • Composer: Wieniawski
  • Publisher: International
Like most of Wieniawski's compositions, L'Ecole Moderne, Op. 10, pushes the violinist's capabilities to the limit. Essentially a collection of virtuosic etudes addressing specific techniques (up- and down-bow staccato, for example), each of the ten studies is a dazzling performance piece unto itself. These works are for solo violin, though Jascha Heifetz often played them with piano accompaniment; where he came up with them, we're not sure.

This edition for violin solo is edited by Ivan Galamian. Published by the International Music Company.

In 1881, Otakar Sevcik, the 29 year-old newly appointed professor of the Kiev Conservatory, forever changed the way violin technique would be studied with the publication of his Op. 1, Violin Left-Hand Technique. Instead of long-winded, meandering studies, Sevcik developed a more concise method that deconstructed technical difficulties into their smallest components, progressing from simple to complex. This method opened a door to overcoming technical problems in the shortest possible time with the least expenditure of energy, assuring rapid progress and technical proficiency. These initial works established Sevcik as one of the foremost pedagogues of his time.

Nearly fifty years after the appearance of his Op. 1, Sevcik's pioneering spirit took him in the new direction of writing repertoire-specific exercises. His method of teaching included the writing of short exercises called "purpose exercises" that addressed a specific technical skill. Sevcik analyzed a concerto, or a virtuoso showpiece, and isolated the inherent technical problems in order to focus on one issue at a time. Gradually, the student would put the puzzle pieces together and be able to successfully perform a difficult work in its entirety.

Each edition includes a solo violin part, a piano accompaniment and the Analytical Studies written for the particular piece. In the Analytical Studies, each measure is addressed separately, and Sevcik goes to extreme measures to separate the different left and right hand difficulties suggesting a solution for each possible problem. Although Sevcik only completed a handful of repertory-specific works, his method of preparation can be used for any piece.

These Analytical Studies and Exercises have been out of print for over seventy-five years. This new printing of these repertoire-specific Sevcik exercises is now available for an entirely new generation of violinists. Accompanying each volume is a modern edition of each selected work by our editors, Endre Granat and Stephen Shipps.

The Etudes-Caprices, Op. 18, are among Wieniawski's better known works for solo violin. Exacting and virtuosic, these brilliant pieces can simultaneously serve as technique studies for the violinist, or as spectacular performance pieces. They are also popular among advanced players as violin duos, with the second violin filling in the harmonies to the "pyrotechnics" presented by the first violin! Sometimes, as in this version, the Etudes-Caprices are played with piano accompaniment. Please note that this edition contains only Etude No. 4 in a minor and Etude No. 5 in E Major - NOT the whole set.

This edition for violin and piano is edited by Zino Francescatti and published by the International Music Company.

Wieniawski, Henryk - Concerto No. 1 in f-sharp minor Op. 14. For Violin and Piano. Edited by Ivan Galamian. Published by International Music Company.

Wieniawski's Concerto No. 1 in f-sharp minor is not nearly as popular as his second concerto, which is a favorite with advanced students and professionals. This is probably due mainly to three factors: the monstrous difficulty of the first movement, the relatively unfriendly key of f-sharp minor, and the feeling among critics and players that the second and third movements simply don't measure up compositionally. On the other hand, there are many violinists who adore the second movement, entitled Preghiera ("prayer"), for its almost religious solemnity and straightforward beauty. Brave souls who feel confident in their command of double-stops (especially tenths) will enjoy the challenges of the first movement, and very likely the whole concerto.

Wieniawski, Henryk - Concerto 2 in d minor, Op. 22. For Violin and Piano. Edited by Ivan Galamian. Published by International Music Company.

Written by one virtuoso for another, Henryk Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2 in d minor, Op. 22 was dedicated to the composer's contemporary, the Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Today it gets considerably more play than the more difficult Concerto No. 1; the Concerto No. 2 is a great favorite among advanced students and concert performers alike, probably because of its beautiful, memorable themes. From the restless intensity of the first movement, to the rich romanticism of the second, to the dark frenzy leading into the gypsy rondo of the final movement, the characters of this concerto are certainly compelling, ensuring its staying power in the violin literature.

This edition contains editorial markings by Ivan Galamian. Published by the International Music Company.

Behind Wieniawski's famous Legende, Op. 17 is a love story. Dedicated to Isabella Hampton, who later became his wife, this romantic piece actually helped the young composer obtain her parents' blessing. As the story goes, Ms. Hampton's parents did not approve of the match, but after hearing Wieniawski's heartfelt anguish (not to mention his musical talent) in the Legende, they were wont to change their minds; Henryk and Isabella were married in 1860. Though the Legende was composed for violin and orchestra, it is probably more often heard in its iteration for violin and piano.

This edition for violin and piano is edited by Gustav Saenger. Published by Carl Fischer.
