The Divertimento for Violin and Piano of Stravinsky is a sort of condensed version of his 1928 ballet score, Le baiser de la fee (The Fairy's Kiss). This ballet falls into Stravinsky's neo-Classical period, and borrows themes and inspiration from another great Russian ballet composer, Tchaikovsky. Stravinsky scored the Divertimento for violin and piano in 1932, for use by himself and violinist Samuel Dushkin. Several years later, he reiterated it as an orchestral suite. The edition for violin and piano is in four movements, and contains challenges best suited to advanced players. This version is edited by Samuel Dushkin. Published by Boosey & Hawkes. Difficulty: A5

The Duo Concertante for Violin and Piano is a five movement work, almost a violin and piano sonata. It is the only piece Stravinsky wrote for violin and piano that wasn't adapted from an earlier work. Composed in 1932, a year after meeting American violinist Samuel Dushkin, who was to become a frequent collaborator and recital partner, it also followed closely on the heels of his first major work for violin, the Concerto in D Major. Each of the five movements is named for an ancient musical form. Much is required of both players in this energetic piece - a true duo!

Chanson Russe, also known as the Russian Maiden's Song, is a violin and piano transcription of an aria from Stravinsky's 1922 opera Mavra. This one-act opera was written during the composer's neo-Classical period, and was considered by Stravinsky himself to be one of his best works. Chanson Russe is a plaintive, almost haunting piece of music, and though the melody is simple, the rhythm can be tricky!

Stravinsky's Suite Italienne for Violin and Piano is based on his score for the 1920 ballet Pulcinella, which is, in turn based on themes by Pergolesi and other 18th century composers. The writing of Pulcinella is considered to mark the beginning of Stravinsky's neo-Classical period, in which he explored the works and styles of past compositional generations, infusing them with a modern understanding of rhythm and harmony. Thus, the Suite Italienne is a unique concert piece, having elements of Classical melodic material and a contemporary feel. Stravinsky made two transcriptions: one in 1925, and one, with the help of Samuel Dushkin, in 1934. Suited to advanced players, and ideal for recital settings. This version for violin and piano is the 1925 transcription, entitled simply "Suite," and is edited by Albert Spalding. Published by Boosey & Hawkes. Difficulty: A5

Two Pieces from The Firebird is a violin and piano transcription made by Stravinsky himself, and includes some of the most beautiful themes from his 1910 ballet. The Prelude et Ronde des princesses is sweet, playful, and almost nave - the dance of the thirteen princesses held captive by the evil Kastchei (and eventually freed by Prince Ivan, with a little help from the Firebird). The Berceuse is slow and seductive, a lullaby representing the magical spell that causes Kastchei and his minions to sleep, and ultimately to meet their doom. This edition for violin and piano is published by Masters Music Publications. Difficulty: A5/A6

In the process of composing the Violin Concerto in D Major, Stravinsky consulted both violinist Samuel Dushkin (his collaborator on many other works for violin), and fellow composer Paul Hindemith. Stravinsky's own instrument was piano, and he wanted to ensure that his creation was not only musically interesting, but also something violinists could and would play. For a concerto, it is quite short - all four movements can be played together in around 20 minutes, with each movement averaging about 5 minutes - and surprisingly cohesive, thanks in part to Stravinsky's unusual approach to tying the movements together thematically. The first three movements begin with a very similar motive, a long, multiple-note chord and an ensuing rhythm that clearly marks the beginning of something new; the final movement includes the chord, but it is expressed very quickly, moving straight on. This great concerto by Stravinsky has experienced some popularity lately, but it is still underplayed! Ideal for advanced players looking for something a little different.

Composed in 1944 on a commission from Germain Prevost, then the violist of the ProArte Quartet, Elegie for Solo Viola was intended to be a memorial to the quartet's first violinist, Alphonse Onnou, who had died in 1940. Appropriately somber and melancholy, it was also Stravinsky's only work for viola. This edition for solo viola also includes an additional solo part for violin. Published by Boosey & Hawkes.

Following World War I, Stravinsky composed the opera Pulcinella, with music based on compositions by the Italian composer Pergolesi.  A great success, over the next 10 years Stravinsky released three pieces based on excerpts from the opera under the title Suite Italienne -- one of which was for Cello and Piano in 1933.  He collaborated with cellist Gregor Piatigorsky for this, resulting in a challenging and unique piece that is arguably better known today than the opera it is based on.

L'histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale), composed in 1918, was originally scored for a small and rather unusual ensemble, ostensibly because of the shortage of available musicians during World War I. That ensemble, a septet, consisted of violin, bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet/trumpet, trombone, and percussion. The storyline of the stage work follows a violin-playing soldier who sells his violin to the devil in exchange for a mysterious book that promises to bring him great wealth and happiness, but this unknowing encounter with the devil instead leads him to ruin. This edition for violin, clarinet (in A), and piano is arranged by Stravinsky himself. Published by the International Music Company. Difficulty: A6
