This tragically beautiful Andantino from Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 4, Op. 83 was transcribed for violin and piano by Dmitri Tsyganov.  As a violinist and member of the Beethoven Quartet, which premiered many of Shostakovich's string quartets, Tsyganov was certainly familiar with the composer's writing for the quartet medium.  The melody of the Andantino begins softly, with a subdued quality, then gradually builds up to a high, wailing climax, and then recedes to nearly nothing, ending with a morendo marking (literally "dying away").  In the quartet, this is the second movement; in this arrangement, it quite capably stands alone.

This version for violin and piano is arranged by Dmitri Tsyganov.  Published by DSCH Publishing.

Dmitri Shostakovich composed his 24 Preludes, Op. 34 for solo piano in 1932-33, just after completing his controversial opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.  Not too long after their composition, a handful of the preludes were transcribed for violin and piano by violinist Dmitri Tsyganov of the Beethoven Quartet, the group that premiered many of Shostakovich's string quartets.  Tsyganov began with this set of Four Preludes, then published a set of ten, then a set of five more.  There were five more preludes that he never arranged for violin and piano, feeling that they were, in essence, too pianistic to work in the new medium.

Shostakovich, Dmitri - Romance from the Suite "The Gadfly" - Viola and Piano - arranged by Sue Otty - SJ Music Edition

Drawn from Shostakovich's film score to the 1955 film The Gadfly, this Romance is a tender, sentimental love theme.  In fact, it is so "schmaltzy" it is almost uncharacteristic of Shostakovich - upon listening to this piece, you might think you were listening to Kreisler!  The film music was, of course scored for the larger sounds of the symphony orchestra, but numerous arrangements have been made for other instrumentations.

This edition has been arranged for viola and piano by Sue Otty.  Published by SJ Music.
