Although the Symphonie Espagnole gets the most attention of any of Lalo's works for violin and orchestra, he did compose a violin concerto in the more-traditional three movement form around the same time. Like the Symphonie Espagnole and several of his other works for violin, the Violin Concerto, Op. 20, was dedicated to the Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. This edition for violin with piano reduction is edited by Carl Herrmann. Published by Edition Peters. Difficulty: A6

Praised by Tchaikovsky for its "freshness, lightness, [and] piquant rhythms," Edouard Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole is essentially a violin concerto in an unusual form. Where a traditional concerto has three movements, it has five, each displaying a different facet of Spanish influence. Lalo composed the piece for the Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate, who himself wrote many pieces exhibiting the musical styles of his native land. Today, the Symphonie Espagnole, with its sparkling vivacity and beautiful melodies, is a staple of the violin literature, performed by advancing students and professionals alike.Difficulty: ASTA grade 6

Frustrated Accompanist Series: Edouard Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole for Violin, Op. 21

This series is terrific and unique! Many currently available piano accompaniments are clumsy, if not outright unplayable, causing frustration; the average accompanist must leave out some notes in difficult sections. Carol Leybourn's reductions are technique-friendly to many accompanists, and music teachers and parents with some knowledge of the piano will love this series!

An alternate ending to the first movement is provided for "first movement only" performance.  Arranged and published by Carol Leybourn.

Difficulty: Intermediate

NOTE: This item is a PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT only, and does NOT include a separate violin part.
