Shar: $7.95Sale: $7.16

  • Instrumentation: Cello
  • Composer: Kodaly
Kodaly wrote his Sonata for solo cello during World War I, significantly one of the first compositions for solo cello since Bach.  Rich with the folk atmosphere for which Kodaly is known, friend and composer Bela Bartok championed the work, stating, " Here [he] is expressing, with the simplest possible technical means, ideas that are entirely original. It is precisely the complexity of the problem that offered him the opportunity of creating an original and unusual style, with its surprising effects of vocal type; though quite apart from these effects the musical value of the work is brilliantly apparent."

Kodaly, Zoltan - Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 4. Edited by Janos Starker and Emilio Colon. Starker Performance Edition. Published by Ludwig Masters Publications.

Item# 3505 100

Shar: $11.95Sale: $10.76

  • Instrumentation: Cello & Piano
  • Composer: Kodaly
Zoltan Kodaly's Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, Opus 4 (1910) was composed along with his Violin Sonata Op. 7 early in his life, before his work was entirely accepted by critics and the public.  This sonata was considered too modern by many at the time of it's premier, though it also prominently features folk themes.  The first movement (Fantasia) opens with a modern, imaginative theme, distinctly reminiscent of French impressionist works, before mixing with Hungarian themes is introduced.  The second and final movement starts just the opposite -- immediately introducing a strong folk theme that Kodaly himself claimed was also inspired by Beethoven.  The end of the second movement re-introduces the Fantasia, achieving rare and powerful unity between the two movements of this Sonata.

Edited by Janos Starker in collaboration with Emilio Colon. Includes editorial notes by Starker.  Starker Performance Editions.  Published by Ludwig Masters Publications.
