Czech composer Leos Janacek is known for incorporating traditional Czech folk melodies into his complex themes, much like other Czech composers were around the turn of the 20th century. Mahrische Tanze is a great example of this, as is to be expected with the title Moravian Dances.' Originally for orchestra, this work was arranged for violin and piano just recently. Fifteen short pieces of varying lengths are included in this work, all of which are different and interesting rhythmically and melodically.

For Violin and Piano. Published by Universal Edition.

Inspired by Leo Tolstoy's controversial novella The Kreutzer Sonata (which was itself partially inspired by Beethoven's eponymous piano and violin sonata), Janáček's String Quartet No. 1 breaks free of traditional harmonic and formal structures. In general, Janáček was not known for staying within those traditional parameters, but in this quartet it is particularly pronounced. Through the music, Janáček is able to communicate the ideas of repression, psychological disturbance, and violence that form the core of Tolstoy's story. It is, in spite of its connection with such a bleak work of literature, a remarkably beautiful piece, albeit a dark one. This Urtext edition has been prepared by Leoš Faltus and Miloš Štědroň, and includes parts only (no score). Published by Bärenreiter Verlag.

Part of Janacek's late flowering in his 70's, this String Quartet is subtitled "Intimate Letters" and refers to the more than 700 letters between him and Kamila Stosslova, a woman 38 years his junior. Caught in an unhappy marriage, this masterpiece of a quartet represents Janacek's "manifesto on love" and is one of his finest - and last - works. It was premiered in September 1928, a month after Janacek died.

This edition contains parts for two violins, viola, and cello. Published by Barenreiter.
