These two lovely Romances for violin and orchestra are not as often performed as his famous violin concerto, but are beloved in their own right.  Ideal transitional pieces for advancing players not quite ready for the demands of the concerto, they also make beautiful additions to a professional's concert repertoire.

In this version from the Classical Play-Along series, there is no piano reduction included.  However, it does contain the violin part and a CD to be used for both listening and play-along.  The CD has tempo adjustment capabilities, useful in practicing.  Students can slow down or speed up the tracks as necessary, and they also get a chance to play along with an orchestra!

Published by Hal Leonard.

Difficulty: ASTA grade 4

NOTE: This item does NOT include a piano part.

Tetzlaff, Christian - Cadenzas for Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 - Violin solo (and Timpani) - Schott Edition

Item# 1016 107

Shar: $13.99Sale: $12.59

  • Instrumentation: Violin
  • Composer: Beethoven
There are numerous cadenzas for Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 - it seems like almost every major performer has his or her own version.  Appropriately so, as the intended purpose of a cadenza is that it give the performer a chance to show improvisatory, personal skill.  This set of cadenzas by violinist Christian Tetzlaff is slightly unusual: the cadenza to the first movement contains a part for...timpani?  As Tetzlaff explains in the preface to this edition, he was following a precedent set by Beethoven himself in including a part for timpani in these cadenzas.  Apparently, in Beethoven's 5th piano concerto, the composer wrote out the cadenza (to prevent the performer's showiness from getting in the way of his music), which included a dialogue between piano and timpani.  Tetzlaff adapted this idea to the violin concerto and wrote his cadenza around that.  The cadenzas to the 2nd and 3rd movements are for violin alone.

This edition contains an explanatory preface by Tetzlaff.  Published by Schott Music.

  • Instrumentation: Violin & Piano
  • Composer: Beethoven

If you have played Beethoven’s popular Romances for violin, you have undoubtedly discovered how difficult it is to find an edition that has not been heavily edited, to the point that it makes it difficult to determine how the composer really wanted his works performed. This new Barenreiter Urtext edition has removed this guesswork, allowing you to stay true to Beethoven’s intentions . . . or to be free to interpret as your heart moves you.

Bärenreiter’s new Urtext edition of opp. 50 and 40 offers the score to op. 50 twice; the first score reflects the state of Beethoven’s autograph with editorial markings clearly indicated, the second score has been edited based on other works by Beethoven from that period. This manner of publishing remains true to the sources and at the same time offers musicians a reliable transparent score for performances.

In addition to the Urtext solo part, a second solo part with fingering and bowing by Detlef Mahn is also included in the piano reduction.
- Piano reduction which includes an Urtext solo part as well as an additional solo part with fingering and bowing
- The score to op. 50 available in two versions
- Detailed critical commentary (Eng)
