Béla Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin, Sz. 117, was commissioned by the renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin in 1943 and completed by the composer in 1944. Bartók was quite ill with leukemia at the time its composition, and was nearing the end of his life. Appropriately to Mr. Menuhin's skill and tastes, the sonata is extremely difficult, and contains a range of advanced violin techniques, including double-, triple-, and quadruple-stops; left-hand pizzicato; and artificial harmonics. This four-movement work has become one of Bartók's most popular pieces for violin.

Written in 1907 as a gift to the Hungarian violinist Stefi Geyer, Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 1 lay in a locked drawer for years before it was finally premiered in 1958, nearly 13 years after the composer's death. The point of contention here was the composer's unrequited love for Ms. Geyer, who was already married and apparently not interested in Bartók's romantic gestures. Romantic, indeed - this concerto is lush and full, bringing out the best of the violin's sound. The concerto has two movements, rather than the usual three, and is a challenging work, sure to find favor with advanced violinists.

Composed during the tense pre-war years of 1937-1938, Béla Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2, Sz. 117 is written in the militaristic "verbunkos" style. This style developed in Hungary, and was no doubt employed by Bartók as an ironic gesture, as the worried composer observed the events of World War II unfolding around him. The first performance was given in Amsterdam in 1939, with its dedicatee, Zoltán Székely, as the soloist.

The short pieces contained in Béla Bartók's Hungarian Folksongs for Violin and Piano were originally featured in his 1909 piano collection For Children, which contained simple arrangements of folk music from Hungary and Slovakia. This transcription for violin and piano was completed by the composer and Tivadar Országh, and is organized into two movements, each of which connects a handful of short folk tunes. Though originally conceived as a set of pedagogical works for children, these charming pieces are just as suitable to recital settings as to lessons.

Composed in 1922, Béla Bartók's Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano, Sz. 76 is one of his most experimental works, and a far cry from his folk-inspired works of the earlier part of the 20th century. Complex rhythms, rapidly changing time signatures, and almost atonal harmonic structures prevail in this sonata. It was revised in 1996 by the composer's son Peter Bartók.

Though Bartók's Sonatina, Sz. 55, was originally conceived for solo piano, its adaptation for violin is a fitting one. Several of the Romanian/Hungarian folk melodies on which the piece is based were actually fiddle tunes, including the "Bear Dance" in the second movement. The inspiration for the first movement was a set of tunes played by "dueling" bagpipers.

This edition for violin and piano is transcribed and edited by André Gertler. Published by Editio Musica Budapest.

Originally for solo piano, Béla Bartók's An Evening In the Village is a short, reflective piece involving two distinct musical ideas that alternate throughout. The first theme is unhurried, like an evening stroll through a quaint village, while the second theme is bright and lively, like dancers twirling merrily in the village tavern. After a few rounds of these contrasting thoughts, the piece ends where it began, with the first theme almost seeming to drift off to sleep.
