Dave Haughey
Dave Haughey, a professional cellist and teacher living in Berkley, Michigan, is well-versed in playing many musical styles. He has performed frequently in professional classical orchestras and chamber groups, as well as in jazz, latin, bluegrass, and rock venues. He has a B.M. in Cello Performance from the School of Music at the University of Northern Colorado. Dave has won many performance awards, including the Montana division NSOA Concerto Competition and the University of Northern Colorado’s school-wide Angie Southard competition. In 2009 he performed as a guest artist with his classical/bluegrass trio, Trio Montana, at the 2009 Rio International Cello Encounter (RICE) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Recently he was invited to play as a guest artist at the Vermont Improvising Strings Academy (VISA) by cellist Eugene Friesen ( In addition to private teaching, he frequently teaches master classes and clinics in the public schools.

He began teaching privately in 2001, and has recently worked as a clinician and chamber music coach in the Detroit area public schools and at various music festivals around the country. In the public schools, besides teaching classical master classes and cello section clinics, he has been teaching and exploring the possibilities of group improvisation with high school orchestra students. By teaching basic structures such as the blues or rock and jointly crafting a groove or melody with the orchestra, a vehicle is created where the students can improvise freely and experience the joy of spontaneous creativity. Since no two works are the same, each student in each orchestra walks away with a unique experience and the invaluable understanding that there are many more possibilities to a string instrumentalist than just reading and interpreting notes on a page.

Dave is committed to exploring new avenues for cello performance. Influenced by his year spent in Brazil and his continual contact with Brazilian music, he loves to use the cello and his voice to play Bossa Nova, Choro, and other Brazilian styles. His original music, which fills out most of the rest of his solo performances, is based in a mixture of jazz, folk, rock, and popular music. Using a unique combination of magnetic and piezo-ceramic pickups, he created an electric cello which he has used, in combination with his unique playing techniques, to create a tone unlike anything else that exists today.

Carrie Cooper
Carrie Cooper is a certified Suzuki violin and viola teacher who has taught middle school strings for the past eleven years in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District.  She has successfully taught hundreds of string players of varying skill level, from beginners to high school students.  The string orchestras she has directed have earned high ratings with judges consistently commenting that her students “play musically and well in tune” and have been “well trained”.  She encourages a positive and structured learning environment and works hard to get the best out of her students.  She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree and was a member of the St. Olaf Orchestra.  Aside from teaching music, Carrie enjoys playing soccer, finding a good cup of coffee, and spending time with her husband and daughter.
