About This Item

"The Dvorak cello concerto is one of the most beloved concertos in the cello repertoire. It contains wistful, powerful melodies as well as tricky technical passages that show the virtuosity of the player." - Heather Hanson, Cello, Shar Apprentice

Composed in New York shortly after the premier of his New World Symphony, the Cello Concerto in b minor was Dvorak's first cello concerto.  He had been hesitant to compose for solo cello, insisting it was insufficient to hold its own against an orchestra and finding only its middle register pleasant.  After yielding to pressure and composing the concerto, though, his friend Johannes Brahms notably exclaimed, "Why on earth didn't I know that one could write a cello concerto like this? If I had only known, I would have written one long ago!"

For Cello and Piano Reduction. Edited by Janos Starker. Published by G. Schirmer.

Difficulty: Asta Grade 6
