Play

For years, teachers and schools have trusted Franz Hoffmann instruments to help bring out the best performances in their students. Consistent quality, playability, visual appeal and value have been the hallmarks of the Franz Hoffmann line, and are only possible because of SHAR's close management of the manufacturing and setup process. Our goal with the Hoffmann Concert viola was to create an advancing level viola with a deep, appealing sound, responsive playability and great looks. Aged, flamed tonewoods, careful hand work, beautfiully-shaded spirit varnish and a relentless quest for quality all add up to the most impressive $400 viola on the market today.

This Franz Hoffmann viola does not come with any accessories, it is the viola only. Most players purchase an outfit to start which includes a case, bow, and rosin, all of which are needed to begin playing. You can find an outfit here.

The "Best in Class!" icon is your assurance that SHAR has searched the world for instruments that are they very best value in each category. We offer a variety of instruments for different playing levels and price ranges, so that you can find the instrument that is perfect for your needs.

In the 1930s, Lionel Tertis, the most influential violist of the 20th century, created a unique design for a viola that allowed for a big, viola sound, yet was easy to navigate by smaller or younger players. The result is a viola with a small upper bout for maneuverability and a large lower bout for big sound. Our new Lamberti® Tertis viola is based on Tertis's design. It is beautifully crafted from choice tonewoods and finished with a subtle antique varnish. Our violists here at SHAR have described this viola's cello-like sound as awesome.

Good instrument

Overall - I strongly recommend this for beginners. I even could recommend this for intermediate players on a budget. Just replace the strings as soon as possible and you should be fine. Then, when you have the money replace the bow and bridge and you're golden. Quick background - I played for 9 years in school, then graduated and had no instrument until 5 years later when I got this. That being said, I'm not exactly a beginner but here is my honest review. Sound quality - it's good for a beginner to learn on for their first two or three years. The strings aren't the best, but since a beginner may be tuning their own strings I would recommend not having expensive ones since they may break. The bow gives a nice sound. The instrument produces a loud enough sound but it is not a very rich sound. Strings- they're okay for a beginner. I recommend keeping them for the first couple years until the player gets tuning down. I replaced mine with some synthetic dominants which were much more responsive and had a better sound quality. With the stock strings you may get more screeching and shifting sound quality. Bow- it has very good control. I liked it other than the fact that the amount of tension is controlled. I couldn't tighten it to the point I like. This is good for beginners because they usually over toughen bows. My bow was a little warped but not too the point that it interferes. Build quality - the instrument is built very well. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to tell it was this inexpensive if I didn't buy it. Everything works the way it should. I want to replace the bridge to a better quality one, that is my only complaint.

Fantastic instrument for the price

I have been playing most of my life on a "junky" instrument (although any pros who've ever tried have always responded with the same "Who makes this??"). I'm not an instrument snob, but it was definitely time to upgrade to something of quality while being on a tight budget. This viola is gorgeous; the flaming on the back and the little aesthetic details are lovely. More importantly, the sound and feel is superb. In college, I once tried a $14k viola, and this one's neck feels way nicer under the fingers. I tried some other less expensive violas too from Shar, and this surpassed them drastically. Shar is a wonderful company to go through; there was no drama and no issues with shipping. I plan to buy a violin of the same model this fall and will use Shar again.

I have had this Viola since 2008 and I love it more every time I play it! It's perfect for people like me, who love the Viola, but may not have the long arms and big hands for it. The structure of the Tertis allows short-armed people like me to still have a professional sounding-instrument without actually having a 16 or 17 in viola. I would recommend this viola to anyone looking to take their playing to the next level!

Three months and not a single regret

I am a beginner, but quickly outgrew the cheap viola I started with. There's little that I can compare this instrument with, but it is comfortable and easy to play, visually beautiful, and the tone is smooth and easy. When my teacher first played it, my jaw probably hit the floor (actually I may have started dancing). I am nowhere near making that sound but I consider that a good thing, as I know it's something I can work toward as I progress. Love this viola!

Karl Joseph Schneider KJS70V16 Antiqued Viola

I own a Karl Joseph Schneider Antiqued 16 inch viola which was built in 2002. Everything about this instrument exceeds my expectations! The craftsmanship is first rate. I never expected to find a German-made instrument of this quality for such a low list price. I bought mine used. It sounded great when I first got it, but I've been amazed at what my continuing tone building efforts have done for its steady growth in sound quality. I Keep my KJS70V16 strung with Obligato strings; and I successfully purchased a Coda Bow Classic (predecessor of the Coda Bow Diamond GX) with optimal weight for this viola's size and string tension. Most of my violin text books claim that it takes 10 to 20 years for the wood to reach maturity in a violin or viola. If my KJS70V16 viola hasn't reached maturity yet, I can hardly wait to hear it in a few more years!

Gotta Play a 3/4, Very Pleasantly Surprised

Read All Reviews (1)

reviewed by: ELIZABETH BUSTAMANTE

I have to play a 3/4 size viola due to joint problems, and thus am not planning to "outgrow" this little fiddle. NO, it doesn't sound like a big one--but it speaks right up, is even across all the strings (Obligato with Helicore C in case anyone is interested) and projects well. It is kind to my stiff old arms and the tone is warm and pleasant! I can imagine that small people and kids will get their money's worth too. To anyone that needs a 14--inch viola, I heartily recommend the Concert.

ASKED BY: POPULAR SHAR STAFF QUESTION

FROM: ANN ARBOR, MI

ASKED ON: August 02, 2016

A. When you buy a beginner's violin or viola, it's a good idea to be aware of its materials, set-up and durability. You'll want the instrument to be made from a solid spruce top and to have maple wood used for its back, neck, and sides. It ought to have real ebony fittings, for durability, and it's ideal to have pegs and fine tuners that are easy to turn and don’t slip. Most importantly, you'll want your violin or viola to meet the proper measurements/specifications and set-up, just like all of the instruments we carry here at SHAR! If the instrument has the proper specifications and set-up, then you will be equipped to succeed at learning the violin or viola. That will help minimize frustration and maximize the enjoyment of learning.
