About This Item

John Adams: The Dharma at Big Sur
Pulitzer winner John Adams composed this concerto for electric violin with Tracy Silverman in mind. Here Tracy joins the BBC Symphony, with the composer himself on the podium, in this major 21st century work by one of America's great composers.

Lauded by BBC as "the greatest living exponent of the electric violin", Tracy Silverman's groundbreaking work with the 6-string electric violin has influenced an entire generation of string players. Formerly first violinist with the innovative Turtle Island String Quartet, Silverman has worked with a who's who of rock, new music, and jazz.

"Tracy has developed his own unique style of violin playing - a marvel of expressiveness... Hearing Tracy Silverman play his six-string electric violin immediately reminded me not only of the great jazz and rock performers and Pakistani qawwalisingers like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (where the real music is in the slide between the notes), but it also made me think of the prose style of Jack Kerouac, so deeply influenced by his listening to the rhythms and melodic arcs of improvised jazz."
- Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award winning composer John Adams

"I entered Juilliard wanting to be the next Jasha Heifetz but I left wanting to be the next Jimi Hendrix. My musical odyssey has brought ma full-cirle - from classical roots to rock to jazz to world music and now back to the classical world as a soloist."
- Tracy Silverman
